"It is a mistake for any elected official in my opinion ... to attack media and journalists. I believe that it's an essential component of our democracy ... But it's really dangerous to demonize the media. It's dangerous to call the media lowlifes. It's dangerous to say they're the 'enemy of the people,'" Bezos said in an on-stage interview hosted by the Economic Club of Washington on Thursday.
He suggested that instead of attacking the media, Trump should believe that it was good for him to be scrutinized by journalists.
Bezos emphasized that he had called on Washington Post reporters to be objective and continue doing their jobs despite poor relations with the White House.
The Washington Post newspaper became a popular target for Trump's condemnation after publishing multiple critical articles about him and his administration, with the president going so far as to claim that the newspaper was spreading fake news.
The Washington Post is one of media outlets included by Trump on a list of what he called winners of his Fake News Awards, which he published in January. The list included nine other news outlets, such as CNN and The New York Times.
