World Suicide Prevention Day: Waseem Akram's wife has a message for people battling depression

Says if you know someone who is in the darkness, be their light and try to understand what they are going through.

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 14th September, 2018) Shaniera Akram, the wife of former cricketer Waseem Akram, has spoken up about depression and darkness on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, which was observed on Sep 10.

Shaniera took to Twitter and said, “To anyone out there suffering depression, please ask for help. It’s 2018, You don’t have to walk alone anymore. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #AskForHelp #WeAreListening”

In another tweet, she added, “If we don’t understand, how are we ever able to help? If you know someone who is in the darkness, be their light and try to understand what they are going through. You might never know the difference you have made to someone’s life, just by understanding #WorldSuicidePreventionDay”

Shaniera further said, “By not understanding we are only leaving our loved ones alone in the darkness #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #DepressionIsReal #LightUpTheDarkness”

Recently, model and fashion designer Anam Tanoli attempted suicide because of mental stress. Her suicide has triggered a debate about depression, bullying and mental health in Pakistan as well.

Following her suicide, President Dr Arif Alvi also called for a 24/7 helpline to address mental health issues.

In a tweet, the pesident wrote, “Millions of people specially women under different socio-economic pressures face depression & some commit suicide. Psychiatric help should be readily available including a 24/7 helpline.”
