Advocacy Group, Trump Admin. Reach Deal For Separated Families to Seek Asylum in US

The Trump administration has accepted a tentative agreement that would give separated families a chance to apply for political asylum in the United States, pending court approval, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced in a press release on Thursday.

Washington (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th September, 2018) The Trump administration has accepted a tentative agreement that would give separated families a chance to apply for political asylum in the United States, pending court approval, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced in a press release on Thursday.

"This agreement would give many families a second chance at seeking asylum and leaves open the possibility for some deported parents to return to the United States," ACLU Deputy Director for Immigrants Rights Lee Gelernt said in the release.

The Trump administration and the ACLU reached the agreement during negotiations late Wednesday night, the release said.

The ACLU filed the original lawsuit that halted a policy of separating children from families that were caught illegally crossing the US-Mexico border, resulting in a court order to reunite affected families.

Despite the court order, several hundred families remain separated because the parents have been deported with the children still in US custody.

"The legal challenge remains ongoing but the agreement, if approved by the court, may allow many separated families to seek asylum," the ACLU said.

Both parties are due back in court on Friday, according to the release.
