EU Offers to Provide Agency for Asylum With Technical, Operational Support - Commissioner

The European Commission has proposed to reinforce the EU Agency for Asylum with technical and operational support, EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs, and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos said on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th September, 2018) The European Commission has proposed to reinforce the EU Agency for Asylum with technical and operational support, EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs, and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos said on Thursday.

"We are proposing to reinforce the European Union Agency for Asylum so it can at all times provide a rapid and full service to member states to manage asylum procedures better and faster. This includes technical and operational support, underpinned by an increased budget of 1.25 billion Euros [$1.45 billion] for the period of 2021-2027," Avramopoulos said at a press conference.

The commissioner added that the EU Agency for Asylum would work together with the European Borders and Coast Guard.

"The reinforced Asylum Agency will work hand in hand with the European Borders and Coast Guard. Together they will now be able to deploy migration management support teams at all times when needed, including hotspots and any future control centers," Avramopoulos specified.

In recent years, the European Union has been facing a large-scale migration crisis. Hundreds of thousands of people, mostly from the middle East and Northern Africa, move to the relatively stable and wealthy European nations, either fleeing from armed conflicts or looking for a better life.
