The US state of South Carolina has mobilized about 1,600 National Guard members in preparation of Hurricane Florence, a major Category 4 storm that is expected to impact large parts of the US East Coast later this week, the US Department of Defense said in a news release on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th September, 2018) The US state of South Carolina has mobilized about 1,600 National Guard members in preparation of Hurricane Florence, a major Category 4 storm that is expected to impact large parts of the US East Coast later this week, the US Department of Defense said in a news release on Tuesday.

"As South Carolina residents and emergency responders prepare for Hurricane Florence, the South Carolina National Guard has mobilized about 1,600 soldiers and airmen to prepare, respond and participate in advance of the major hurricane projected to make landfall near the Carolinas," the release said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said Hurricane Florence has maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215km/h) and is expected to make landfall along the coast of North Carolina or South Carolina on Friday.

The hurricane could cause life-threatening storm surges, severe flooding, heavy rainfall and damaging winds, the National Weather Service said.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency on September 8, which allowed the National Guard to activate its members.
