Trump Says US-Japanese Trade Talks Underway, Tokyo To Face 'Big Problem' If Deal Fails

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th September, 2018) US President Donald Trump told reporters that the United States last week started new talks with Japan and Tokyo will have a big problem if a deal is not reached.

"We're starting that, yeah... Japan has already contacted us; they came last week," Trump said on Friday when asked if trade talks had begun with Japan. "And I'll tell you, if we don't make a deal with Japan, Japan knows it's a big problem for them."

Trump also said that the Japanese would not deal with the Obama administration because "they felt there was going to be no retribution."

Last month, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Japanese Minister for Economic Revitalization Toshimitsu Motegi during talks agreed to explore ways to close the gap on trade positions.

US Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and business Affairs Manisha Singh visited Japan last month as part of a nearly two week trip in the Indo-Pacific region to discuss free trade.
