Beijing Slams UK Report on Hong Kong, Condemns UK for Posing as 'Supervisor'

The Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said on Friday that she considered it strange for the United Kingdom to comment on Hong Kong affairs, posing as a "supervisor.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th September, 2018) The Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said on Friday that she considered it strange for the United Kingdom to comment on Hong Kong affairs, posing as a "supervisor."

Her remark came after the UK government released its latest edition of the biannual report on Hong Kong, covering the issues of the UK-Hong Kong bilateral relations. In his foreword for the report, published on Thursday, UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that he was "concerned" over China's pressure on Hong Kong's autonomy as well as on the "rights and freedoms" in the region.

"It is ridiculous for the UK to pose as a "supervisor" to make irresponsible remarks on Hong Kong affairs. The Chinese side can by no means accept that. China has stressed many times that Hong Kong affairs fall within China's domestic affairs, which brook no interference from any foreign country. The so-called 'responsibility' that the British side claimed for Hong Kong does not exist," Hua said at a briefing.

She called on the UK government to "face the reality squarely" and stop meddling in Hong Kong's affairs.

"Since the return of Hong Kong, the policies of 'one country, two systems,' 'Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong' and a high degree of autonomy have been earnestly implemented," Hua pointed out.

Southern China's region Hong Kong, which used to be a British colony since 1842, was returned to China in 1997 on the condition that the Chinese government would adhere to the "one country, two systems" concept, which means the region would remain capitalist and would not comply with the Chinese socialist system until 2047.
