Russian Manufacturer UAC Says Working With Defense Ministry on VTOL Plane Features

Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) is in talks with the Defense Ministry on determining the characteristics of the new Russian vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, UAC President Yury Slyusar said on Friday.

GELENDZHIK (Russia) (Pakistan Point news / Sputnik - 07th September, 2018) Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) is in talks with the Defense Ministry on determining the characteristics of the new Russian vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, UAC President Yury Slyusar said on Friday.

"Such an issue exists. We are currently engaged in active talks with the Defense Ministry about what aircraft they need, their characteristics. The Defense Ministry is currently forming its requirements for this plane," Slyusar pointed out.

Several enterprises that are part of the UAC will be engaged in creating the VTOL aircraft, the official added.

In August, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuriy Borisov said that the Defense Ministry had begun working on the new VTOL aircraft and planned to complete this project in up to 10 years.

The first Russian VTOL aircraft was created back in the Soviet Union. The Yak-38 airplane was used by the Navy from the 1970s but was subsequently abandoned due to the high accident risk. The Yak-141 aircraft was created in the 1980s to replace the Yak-38, but the project was scrapped in the 2000s.
