The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Sends Over 1 Tonne of Humanitarian Aid to Donbas - Ukrainian Border Service

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) sent over 1 tonne of humanitarian aid to Ukraine's embattled region of Donbas, the press service of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine said Friday.

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th September, 2018) The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) sent over 1 tonne of humanitarian aid to Ukraine's embattled region of Donbas, the press service of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine said Friday.

"One truck with humanitarian aid, namely, with medical equipment from the UNICEF, has proceeded through Novotroits'ke checkpoint into the territory that is temporarily not under Ukrainian control. The total weigh of the cargo is registered as 1 tonne," the border service said in a statement.

In August, the United Nations sent two tonnes of humanitarian aid to Donbas, while in July, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) sent 154 tonnes of humanitarian assistance to the region.

In 2014, two regions in eastern Ukraine, Luhansk and Donetsk, unilaterally proclaimed themselves independent people's republics after a new government came to power in Kiev. The central authorities then launched a military campaign in the region.

In 2015, a ceasefire agreement was brokered by the leaders of the so-called Normandy Four group (France, Germany, Russia, and Ukraine). However, the situation remains unstable with both sides reporting violations of the truce by their opponents.
