Trade Conflicts Pose Greatest Threat to Near-Term Global Growth - Lagarde

World trade conflicts pose the most serious risk to the global economy, particularly if such disputes continue to escalate, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde warned on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th September, 2018) World trade conflicts pose the most serious risk to the global economy, particularly if such disputes continue to escalate, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde warned on Thursday.

"The greatest near-term threat to global growth is the risk that trade conflicts escalate further," Lagarde said during remarks welcoming Russian Central Bank Governor Elvir Nabiullina to the IMF, where she was expected to deliver the fund's annual Michel Camdessus Central Banking Lecture.

Lagarde acknowledged that trade conflicts could have "adverse effects on confidence, asset prices, investment and growth."

The IMF chief called such disputes "a major challenge for emerging economies" that could lead to a reversal of capital flows and rising costs of finance.
