Authorities in Germany's Thuringia to Check AfD Compliance With Constitution - Reports

A state intelligence agency in Germany's Thuringia will examine the activity of the local office of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and its compliance with the country's Constitution following the Chemnitz anti-immigration protests, local media reported on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th September, 2018) A state intelligence agency in Germany's Thuringia will examine the activity of the local office of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and its compliance with the country's Constitution following the Chemnitz anti-immigration protests, local media reported on Thursday.

The decision to examine the party's activities was taken following recent events in Chemnitz and local party leadership's threats against police officers and nationalist statements allegedly made by the party's leader in Thuringia Bjorn Hocke, according to the MDR broadcaster.

The intelligence agency will be reportedly collecting data related to the activities of the AfD local office, including official events and statements made by the party's officials.

A poll by INSA for Bild showed on Monday that the AfD overtook the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), becoming the second major political force in the country.

Germany's eastern city of Chemnitz has recently seen several far-right rallies and counterprotests, which broke out after the death of a German national. The police have detained two suspects, reportedly of Iraqi and Syrian origin.
