VIENNA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th September, 2018) The solution to the conflict in Syria can be found by working directly with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US State Secretary Mike Pompeo, Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl said on Thursday.
"We should seek a solution to the Syrian conflict in direct contact with ministers Pompeo and Lavrov. We are all interested in ending the bloodshed. It also concerns the return of refugees, humanitarian assistance and restoration [of the country]," Kneissl said as quoted by the Austrian Foreign Ministry's press service.
The statement comes following Kneissl's meeting with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini in Brussels earlier on Thursday where they discussed the question of engaging with Russia and the United States on Syria.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Wednesday that Syria would be high on the agenda of a meeting between Lavrov and Pompeo at the UN General Assembly, which will take place later this month.
