Kremlin Spokesman Refutes Putin, Merkel Speaking About Syria Earlier on Thursday

Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel did not hold a phone conversation on Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, commenting on Merkel's remark about her discussing the situation in Syria with Putin

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th September, 2018) Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel did not hold a phone conversation on Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, commenting on Merkel's remark about her discussing the situation in Syria with Putin.

Earlier on Thursday, Merkel told journalists that she had discussed with Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the situation in Syria, particularly in Idlib province.

"Perhaps she referred to some earlier conversation, because today there was a conversation with the Spanish prime minister, of which we have informed you. There was no [phone conversation with Merkel] today," Peskov said, adding that Merkel and Putin had not talked on Wednesday either.

Peskov suggested that Merkel might have meant that she had discussed the issue with Putin in general, not necessarily on Thursday.

In late July, Putin and Merkel held a phone conversation, during which a number of international and regional issues were discussed. In August, Putin held three-hour talks with Merkel in Germany, during which they exchanged views on the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria as well as on the situation with the Iran nuclear deal.
