Kenya Apologizes to China for Detention of CGTN Journalists in Nairobi - Beijing

Kenya has apologized for the raid on the headquarters of the Chinese state-owned China Global Television Network (CGTN) Africa TV channel in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi and the detention of Chinese journalists and others who worked at the broadcaster, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a briefing on Thursday.

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th September, 2018) Kenya has apologized for the raid on the headquarters of the Chinese state-owned China Global Television Network (CGTN) Africa tv channel in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi and the detention of Chinese journalists and others who worked at the broadcaster, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a briefing on Thursday.

According to the Chinese diplomat, the Kenyan police carried out an operation on Wednesday to apprehend irregular migrants and mistakenly detained several Chinese journalists who had all the necessary documents authorizing them to work in the country.

"All the detained individuals were released on the same day [Wednesday]. The Kenyan party has already apologized for the incident and pledged that it would not happen again," Hua said.

She stressed that the police operation targeted illegal migrants rather than the Chinese citizens and called on Chinese nationals to respect the migration rules of their countries of residence.

On Wednesday, media reported that at least 13 Chinese journalists and CGTN staff were detained during police searches in Kenya that were aimed at identifying foreigners working in the country illegally. After the Chinese citizens' documents were verified, all of them were immediately released.
