Russia Objects to UNSC's 'Destructive' Meddling in Nicaraguan Domestic Crisis - Nebenzia

The UN Security Council (UNSC) discussion on Nicaragua's internal political situation is an example of destructive foreign interference, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia said during a meeting on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th September, 2018) The UN Security Council (UNSC) discussion on Nicaragua's internal political situation is an example of destructive foreign interference, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia said during a meeting on Wednesday.

"The Russian Federation categorically objects to the Security Council's discussion of the situation in Nicaragua," Nebenzia told UNSC members. "The Security Council is a body that is responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security. The domestic political situation in Nicaragua poses no such threats. Rather it represents a glaring and grim example of destructive foreign intervention."

Turmoil erupted in Nicaragua on April 18 when people took to the streets to protest unpopular social security reforms. This led to months of demonstrations, which saw some 300 people killed and 2,000 others injured.

On Wednesday, the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) expressed regret over Nicaragua's decision to terminate the OHCHR mission in the country after the panel issued a report which alleged multiple human rights violations in the country.
