Haley Says US Has 'Right' To Impose Unilateral Sanctions On Iran

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th September, 2018) The United States feels that is has the right to impose sanctions on Iran unilaterally despite claims that the measures are illegitimate, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said in a press conference.

UN Special Rapporteur Idriss Jazairy said last week the US sanctions against Tehran are unreasonable, unjustified, and illegitimate and should be suspended.

"The United States believes it has the ability to put those sanctions on Iran because it goes back to the fact that we think they violated Security Council resolutions," Haley said on Tuesday. "The United States feels we have that right."

Washington, she added, has engaged in discussions with European allies about the situation in Iran and the partners have agreed Tehran's activities have been causing problems for the international community However, none of the countries took immediate steps to address the Iran issue and, therefore, the United States had to make the move unilaterally, Haley said.

The United States continues to see Tehran engaging in activities that are not helpful, whether it is in Lebanon, Yemen, or Syria, Haley said.

Haley also said Iran has a right to speak during a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council in September. If Iranian President Hassan Rouhani decides to make a statement, the United States would allow it, Haley added.

The US ambassador said Washington wants to expose Tehran's violations and give a voice to the Iranian people. The United States does not aim to change the regime in Iran, Haley said.

The United States after exiting the Iran nuclear accord in May imposed multiple rounds of economic sanctions on Tehran and would-be trading partners targeting the country's Currency, sovereign debt, energy sector, and several other industries and financial transactions.
