Russian, German Diplomats Discuss Importance of Preserving Iran Nuclear Deal - Moscow

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and the German Foreign Ministry's political director, Antje Leendertse, emphasized the importance of preserving the Iran nuclear deal following the United States' withdrawal during their Tuesday talks, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th September, 2018) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and the German Foreign Ministry's political director, Antje Leendertse, emphasized the importance of preserving the Iran nuclear deal following the United States' withdrawal during their Tuesday talks, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"The parties covered, in detail, the situation around the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program. Both sides underlined the importance of preserving the JCPOA," the ministry said.

Ryabkov and Leendertse also discussed the issues of arms control and non-proliferation, which both parties are interested in, the statement added.

The 2015 Iran nuclear deal stipulates the gradual removal of the West's sanctions against Tehran in exchange for the middle Eastern country abandoning its nuclear weapons program.

The United States announced its withdrawal from the multilateral accord in May, which led to the reinstatement of the first round of its anti-Iranian sanctions in August.

In the wake of this move, Germany and Russia, as well as other parties to the Iranian nuclear deal China, France, Iran, the United Kingdom and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to the agreement.
