German Foreign Minister Vows To Focus On Syria's Idlib During Upcoming Visit To Turkey

BERLIN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th September, 2018) German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Monday that the situation in Syria's Idlib would be the central issue of discussions during his visit to Turkey later this week.

"We will do everything to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in Idlib. It will be a highly important topic of my visit to Turkey on Wednesday and Thursday this week," Maas told reporters in Berlin.

The minister added that Turkey's position was "essential for further steps of Russia and Syrian President Bashar Assad."

The situation in Idlib, the last militant stronghold in Syria, has escalated over the past weeks amid the recent reports of a potential government offensive after Russia said it had evidence that terrorists in Idlib were preparing a false-flag chemical weapons attack to frame the government forces and spark a US-led military intervention. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last week that talks were underway to create humanitarian corridors in Idlib to allow civilians to leave the province.
