Poroshenko Says Ukraine Has Enough Prerequisites To Join NATO, EU

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th September, 2018) Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Monday that his country has political and legal grounds to become a member of the European Union and NATO.

On Monday, Poroshenko introduced a bill to the parliament proposing constitutional amendments which would enshrine Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union and NATO.

"Ukraine has enough political and legal prerequisites to be fully integrated into the European Union and NATO," Poroshenko said in the explanatory note to the proposal.

The president also suggested to exclude from the constitution provisions allowing other states to deploy their military bases on the Ukrainian territory.

In 2014, Ukraine relinquished its status of non-affiliation with any blocs. In 2016, additional legislation was adopted to set Ukraine's interest in joining NATO as one of the key national priorities.

However, despite Kiev's efforts, NATO and EU officials have repeatedly stressed that Ukraine needed to implement a wide range of reforms before pursuing membership in the blocs.
