Former UK Foreign Minister Johnson Labels Government Brexit Plan 'Disaster'

Former UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on Monday called the government Brexit plan, the so-called Chequers deal, a "disaster," and stressed that a "generous" free trade deal would be the best solution.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd September, 2018) Former UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on Monday called the government Brexit plan, the so-called Chequers deal, a "disaster," and stressed that a "generous" free trade deal would be the best solution.

"If we go ahead with the Chequers proposals, we are forswearing the project of Global Britain ... and abandoning the notion of the UK as a proud independent economic actor. We will remain in the EU taxi; but this time locked in the boot, with absolutely no say on the destination. We won't have taken back control - we will have lost control .... People can see Chequers means disaster," Johnson wrote on Facebook.

The former foreign minister added that opting for a deal similar to the one Norway has or joining the European Economic Area free trade union would not help.

"The answer is to go for the one solution that both delivers Brexit and treats all the UK in the same way: a big and generous Free Trade Deal, with intimate partnerships on foreign policy, justice, and all the rest," Johnson wrote.

Johnson submitted his resignation in July, shortly after then-Brexit Secretary David Davis left his office over the disapproval of the deal agreed by the government at Prime Minister Theresa May's residence Chequers.

The deal proposed maintaining common rules on all goods in order to avoid any difficulties at border. Services would be subject to different regulations. The UK government suggested a facilitated customs arrangement, under which the United Kingdom would apply domestic tariffs on the goods shipped to the country and EU tariffs for goods that have to go on to the bloc.
