Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Confirms Abe to Take Part in EEF-2018 During Russia Visit

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga confirmed on Monday that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe would visit Russia to participate in the 2018 Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok.

TOKYO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd September, 2018) Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga confirmed on Monday that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe would visit Russia to participate in the 2018 Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok.

"If circumstances allow, the prime minister will take part in the Eastern Economic Forum on September 11 and consider the possibility of a summit [on the forum's sidelines]," Suga said.

Touching upon Japan's territorial claims to Russia regarding the southern Kurils, Suga noted that Tokyo wanted a future-oriented solution of the territorial issue and the conclusion of a peace treaty that would suit both countries.

According to the Kyodo news agency, Abe's visit to Russia is scheduled for September 10-13, the possibility of holding talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the visit is being considered by Abe.

The main event of the forum will be the plenary session "The Russian Far East: Creating a New Reality" with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Within the framework of the EEF-2018, five interstate business dialogues are planned, including Russia-ASEAN, Russia-India, Russia-China, Russia-South Korea, and Russia-Japan.

The EEF, which has been held annually since 2015, is one of the biggest economic forums in Russia. It aims to support the accelerated development of the Russian Far East's economy, as well as strengthen ties between Russian businesses and the international investment community.
