Iraqi Prime Minister Abadi, Shiite Cleric Sadr Form Parliamentary Majority Bloc - Reports

Sixteen Iraqi political blocs, including those of county's Prime Minister Haider Abadi and Shiite cleric Muqtada Sadr, have formed the largest coalition of the newly elected Iraqi parliament ahead of the first parliamentary session, set to take place on Monday, Kurdish media reported.

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd September, 2018) Sixteen Iraqi political blocs, including those of county's Prime Minister Haider Abadi and Shiite cleric Muqtada Sadr, have formed the largest coalition of the newly elected Iraqi parliament ahead of the first parliamentary session, set to take place on Monday, Kurdish media reported.

As the coalition holds 177 seats out of 329 in the Iraqi parliament, it will be capable to form the new government.

According to the Kurdistan 24 tv channel, Abadi and Sadr will lead the coalition.

The decision to form the coalition was announced following a meeting, during which a number of political blocs announced their decision to join the core of the alliance that Sadr, Abadi, cleric Ammar Hakim and Iraqi Vice President Ayad Allawi formed on August 19.

At the inaugural session of the newly elected Iraqi parliament, the lawmakers will elect the parliamentary speaker and his two deputies. The parliamentarians will later elect a new president, and he will task the majority bloc to form a government.

Although the first parliamentary election in the country since the defeat of the Islamic State's terrorist group (banned in Russia) was held on May 12, the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq ratified the results of the election on August 19, as a manual recount was launched in early July due to multiple reports on violations.
