Trump Threatens to Eject Canada From New NAFTA Deal If Sides Fail to Reach Fair Agreement

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he might leave Canada out of the new North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which Washington is currently negotiating with Ottawa and Mexico City, if the parties failed to reach "a fair deal.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd September, 2018) US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he might leave Canada out of the new North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which Washington is currently negotiating with Ottawa and Mexico City, if the parties failed to reach "a fair deal."

On Monday, Trump announced that the United States and Mexico, another NAFTA member, had reached a tentative agreement. The US-Canada trade talks on Friday did not yield results, and several media reported that Canadian officials had confronted the US side over Trump allegedly saying that the negotiations were "totally on [US] terms."

"There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal. If we don't make a fair deal for the US after decades of abuse, Canada will be out. Congress should not interfere [with] these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely [and] we will be far better off," Trump tweeted.

Canada, Mexico and the United States have been engaged in talks to modernize the agreement for over a year at Trump's initiative. A new trade deal with Mexico and Canada would potentially replace the 1994 NAFTA.

The United States and Canada will restart trade talks next Wednesday, September 5.
