Ukrainian Court Sentences Suspect of Babchenko Alleged Murder Plot to 4.5 Years - SBU

A Kiev court sentenced Borys Herman, a suspected organizer of the alleged plot to assassinate Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko, to four and a half years in prison, Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) chief Vasyl Hrytsak said on Saturday.

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st September, 2018) A Kiev court sentenced Borys Herman, a suspected organizer of the alleged plot to assassinate Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko, to four and a half years in prison, Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) chief Vasyl Hrytsak said on Saturday.

On May 29, Babchenko, who moved to Ukraine in 2017, was said to have been shot dead near his apartment in Kiev but showed up next day at a press conference hosted by Hrytsak, who said that the journalist's murder was staged as part of an operation to foil an actual assassination plot against him. Herman was arrested in early June as the suspect behind the murder plot.

"He was sentenced to four years and six months in prison," Hrytsak said, as cited by the Pryami broadcaster.

A number of foreign states and international organizations condemned the manipulations of Ukrainian authorities and called them counterproductive after it was revealed that Babchenko's murder had been staged.
