US Nuclear Submarine Turns Up Near Mediterranean - Reports

A US nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with Tomahawk missiles has entered the port of Gibraltar at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, days after Russia warned about a new strike on Syria

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st September, 2018) A US nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with Tomahawk missiles has entered the port of Gibraltar at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, days after Russia warned about a new strike on Syria.

The Angeles-class USS Newport News was photographed sailing into the port on Thursday evening, the Gibraltar Chronicle news website said.

The Defense Ministry in the British overseas territory referred to the port call as "a scheduled logistical visit," according to the publication.

A Spanish customs boat reportedly tried to approach the US Navy submarine but was chased away by a local police vessel.

This is the second time a US submarine has called on Gibraltar after the USS John Warner passed through in March on the way to the Mediterranean where it fired Tomahawk missiles at targets in Syria.

The Russian military this week accused Syrian militants in the restive northwestern Idlib province of preparing a chemical attack they wanted to blame on Syrian authorities to provoke another strike by the United States and its allies.
