Zakharchenko's Murder Aims to Derail Donbas Peace Process - Russian Foreign Ministry

The assassination of Alexander Zakharchenko, the leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), is aimed at undermining the peace process in Ukraine's Donbas region, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday, adding that such actions created a threat of destabilization of the situation in the conflict-torn area.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 31st August, 2018) The assassination of Alexander Zakharchenko, the leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), is aimed at undermining the peace process in Ukraine's Donbas region, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday, adding that such actions created a threat of destabilization of the situation in the conflict-torn area.

"We are sure that a proper investigation will be carried out shortly as a result of which all the circumstances [of the murder] would be determined and the assassins and those who ordered the crime would be identified. However, it is already clear that this terror act aims to derail the process of peace settlement of the situation in Donbas and the implementation of the Minsk agreements," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"This [assassination] looks especially cynical amid the recently announced 'school' truce. The murder of one of the signatories of the [Minsk accords] fits within Kiev's pattern of the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict with the use of force. Such actions create a serious threat of destabilization of the situation in southeastern Ukraine," the statement pointed out.
