Russia Thanks China for Careful Attitude to Soviet Military Memorials - Ambassador

Russia is grateful to China for the latter's attention to Soviet military memorials in the country, Russian Ambassador to China Andrey Denisov said on Friday.

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 31st August, 2018) Russia is grateful to China for the latter's attention to Soviet military memorials in the country, Russian Ambassador to China Andrey Denisov said on Friday.

Earlier in the day, the Russian cultural center in Beijing hosted an event devoted to the 73rd anniversary of Japan's unconditional surrender at the end of World War II.

"I would like to express words of deep gratitude to our Chinese friends for their careful attitude ... to the Soviet military memorials on Chinese soil," the ambassador said.

Denisov recalled that the Soviet Union was the only country that provided China with meaningful assistance when it was faced with Japanese aggression during World War II.

He added that the Soviet Union lost between 12,000 and 13,000 soldiers during the 1945 military operation against Japanese troops in northern China.

The Soviet Union launched a full-scale offensive in the northern Chinese region of Manchuria on August 9, 1945. The successful Soviet operation along with the US nuclear bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Tokyo to surrender on September 2, bringing an end to World War II.
