UK to Fund New Cyber Center in Kenyan Capital to Tackle Online Child Sex Abuse - Statement

The United Kingdom will build a new cyber center in Kenya's capital of Nairobi to aid Kenyan police in stopping online child sex abuse, a press release issued by the UK Cabinet Office stated on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th August, 2018) The United Kingdom will build a new cyber center in Kenya's capital of Nairobi to aid Kenyan police in stopping online child sex abuse, a press release issued by the UK Cabinet Office stated on Thursday.

During her ongoing visit to Kenya, UK Prime Minister Theresa May has announced at a press conference with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta a number of agreements between the two countries that enhance bilateral cooperation in areas of trade and security.

"British paedophiles, who target and abuse vulnerable children in Kenya will be brought to justice thanks to a new cyber centre being built by Britain in Nairobi, the Prime Minister will announce today. Online child sex abuse is a global problem with images created and shared across the world, including in Kenya. This new centre will help the Kenyan police stop these images being distributed online to help protect children from being abused," the press release stated.

The release stated that the new cyber center in Nairobi will allow for Kenyan authorities to access relevant data on abusers from technology companies.

"With the support of British funding, the new specialist cyber centre will, for the first time, enable Kenyan authorities to access data on abuse, provided the by tech firms, ensuring perpetrators can be brought to justice," the release stated.

With the help of relevant information provided by technology firms, the center would develop a secure channel for the reporting of material to take place. According to the release, the cyber center will allow the Kenyan police to identify potential victims, investigate abuse, and prosecute abusers.

The cyber center will be part of Kenya's existing Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Protection Unit, created with the help of the UK's National Crime Agency, that has helped around 400 children since March 2016.
