California, US Trump Admin. Seek Single Emission, Fuel Economy Rules For Cars - Regulators

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th August, 2018) Regulators from the state of California and three Federal US agencies have set a goal of achieving a nationwide standard for fuel economy and exhaust emissions for automobiles, according to joint statement.

"Today administration officials from the White House, DOT [Department of Transportation] and EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] met with the California Air Resources board (CARB) to discuss the proposed SAFE Vehicles Rule," the statement read on Wednesday. "The administration and CARB agreed to future meetings to discuss technical, legal, and policy issues with the shared goal of achieving one national set of standards for vehicle fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions."

The Trump administration proposed fuel-efficiency standards for cars that would roll back rules imposed during the Obama administration, claiming consumers would benefit from lower car prices and safer cars.

The administration proposal would also revoke a legal exemption that allows California and more than a dozen other states to set their own auto pollution rules that are more restrictive than federal regulations.

The proposal provoked widespread condemnation from environmental groups over the potential impact on climate change and a pledge from California Governor Jerry Brown to fight the initiative.
