MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th August, 2018) Russia's Investigative Committee said on Wednesday that two more employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) were detained over abuse of power in a penal colony in Yaroslavl.
On August 24, Svetlana Petrenko, the committee's spokeswoman, said that the committee had launched a criminal investigation into the FSIN staff after the Russian Novaya Gazeta newspaper published a video featuring penal colony staff beating prisoners. A similar video, in which colony employees were hitting prisoner Yevgeny Makarov was made public in July. It triggered a high-profile case, with 12 FSIN employees already detained in connection with the incident.
"[Prison] employees ... Sardor Ziyabov and Dmitry Nikitinko were detained on suspicion of committing a crime. Investigators have requested that they be arrested. We are currently in the process of identifying other officials who participated in the prisoner beatings," the committee said in a message published on its WhatsApp account.
The FSIN decided to create a commission to investigate all cases of the use of force in prisons following the scandal.
