US Senate Democrats Question Details Of Trump Trade Deal With Mexico - Minority Leader

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th August, 2018) Democrats in the US Senate are reluctant to embrace President Donald Trump's announcement of a trade deal with Mexico because they have yet to hear what the package contains, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters on Tuesday.

"I'm a little worried this one's like North Korea," Schumer said. "They have a nice announcement, but then we don't see the details and who knows what we'll see afterwards. So we're in a period of watchful waiting."

The deal announced by Trump on Monday would change rules governing auto manufacturing in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in an attempt to bring more car production back to the United States, but little else is known about the latest agreement, which must eventually be approved by Congress.

Schumer's North Korea analogy refers to Trump's announcement following a June summit with leader Kim Jong Un in which the US president claimed the nuclear threat from Pyongyang's nuclear weapons had been resolved.

Since then, follow up meetings between US and North Korean officials have been canceled, the United States and South Korea have announced military exercises would resume following a brief suspension and Trump has openly criticized Pyongyang for failing to follow through on a pledge to denuclearize.
