Macron's Proposal of Strategic Partnership With Russia Positive Step - French Senator

French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal to build a strategic partnership between France and Russia is a positive step forward, Sophie Primas, the chair of the committee on economic affairs of the French Senate, told Sputnik on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th August, 2018) French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal to build a strategic partnership between France and Russia is a positive step forward, Sophie Primas, the chair of the committee on economic affairs of the French Senate, told Sputnik on Tuesday.

On Monday, the French president said it was necessary for France to build a strategic partnership with Russia as well as Turkey, since both nations were important for collective security and therefore needed to be tied to Europe.

"This [Macron's announcement] is good news, I think, because what we feel here in Russia is that there is a very strong, very ancient relationship. It is beyond economics it is something cultural, something from our roots," Primas, who arrived to Moscow as part of a delegation of French lawmakers, said in answer to a relevant question.

Macron previously expressed his desire to work on joint initiatives with Russia during his first state visit to the country in May, where a series of agreements on nuclear energy, Arctic development and finance were announced.
