US, Mexico to Minimize Trade-Distorting Policies Amid New Deal - Agriculture Secretary

The United States and Mexico are committed to reduce policies that make it harder to engage in bilateral commerce, US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue said in a statement on Monday after the two countries reached a new trade agreement.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th August, 2018) The United States and Mexico are committed to reduce policies that make it harder to engage in bilateral commerce, US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue said in a statement on Monday after the two countries reached a new trade agreement.

"[W]e mutually pledge to work together with Mexico to reduce trade-distorting policies, increase transparency and ensure non-discriminatory treatment in grading of agricultural products," Perdue said.

US President Donald Trump announced earlier that the United States and Mexico have reached a preliminary deal, but will not be called the North American Trade Agreement (NAFTA.)

Canada has yet to decide whether it will join the US-Mexico trade agreement or conclude a separate agreement with the United States.

Trump told reporters that he was going to start talks with Canada relatively soon, but reiterated that the United States may impose new tariffs on Canadian automobiles if Ottawa continues its unfair trade policies.

Perdue expressed hope that Canada would realize the need to discuss the current trade issues and come to an agreement with the United States and Mexico, so the parties restore the original trade trio.

The agriculture secretary said the new trade agreement with Mexico specifically addressed agricultural biotechnology that helps the country stay up to date with the recent innovations.

Perdue called the signing of the deal a win for US farmers, because they would benefit from getting access to Mexican markets.
