Kiev Says to Refrain From Cancelling Deal With Russia on Azov Sea, Kerch Strait

Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Olena Zerkal said Monday that Kiev will not break the agreement with Moscow on cooperation on the use of the Sea of Azov and the Strait of Kerch.

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th August, 2018) Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Olena Zerkal said Monday that Kiev will not break the agreement with Moscow on cooperation on the use of the Sea of Azov and the Strait of Kerch.

Last week, Ivan Vinnyk, a member of the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko, called for the cancellation of the deal.

"Cancellation of the agreement with Russia on the Sea of Azov is out of the question - will enable Russia to declare a territorial dispute. For us, this is a security issue, so we use the available tools to resolve this issue," Zerkal said, as quoted by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure, between April 29 and July 9, Russia detained a total of 93 Ukrainian ships heading to Ukraine via the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov, for inspection without specifying the reasons. As a result, the owners suffered losses because the ships stood idle. However, Zerkal said that the Russian border guard officers acted in accordance with the protocol.
