Russia Should Focus on Widening Baikal-Amur, Trans-Siberian Railroads - Putin

Russia should focus on enlarging the narrowest stretches of Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) and Trans-Siberian Railway network, both running through Siberia, in the coming years to increase transport capabilities, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday.

KEMEROVO (Russia) (Pakistan Point news / Sputnik - 27th August, 2018) Russia should focus on enlarging the narrowest stretches of Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) and Trans-Siberian Railway network, both running through Siberia, in the coming years to increase transport capabilities, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday.

"As you know, the development of the eastern network of railways widening narrow stretches of BAM and Trans-Siberian Railway has been set as priority goals for the development of transport infrastructure in Russia in the next few years," Putin said at a session of the panel focused on the development of the energy industry.

The president added that the logistics and export routes needed improvement, in particular, the capacities of railways, used extensively by the coal industry.

Putin stressed that the coal companies' plans for the increased production should correlate with the railways development plans as well as with sea ports investment projects.

"It is important to ensure balanced all-encompassing approach to increase railways' capacities," Putin said.

The Trans-Siberian Railway network links the Russian capital with the country's Far East. At over 5,700 miles, it is the longest railway line in the world. The Baikal-Amur Mainline runs through eastern Siberia and the Russian Far East, parallel to the Trans-Siberian line.
