A human rights watchdog on Monday called on newly elected Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan to focus on protecting economic, social and cultural rights.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th August, 2018) A human rights watchdog on Monday called on newly elected Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan to focus on protecting economic, social and cultural rights.

"Dear Prime Minister Khan, as your government takes charge, we write to you about the human rights situation in Pakistan and urge that you take some key steps to help address current and longstanding problems ... We urge you to take concrete steps to protect fundamental civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights in the areas specified below," the Human Rights Watch said in a letter to Khan.

The watchdog welcomed Khan's election pledge to protect the rights of women and minority groups and stressed that they were looking forward to "a constructive relationship" with the new government.

Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won 31.8 percent of the vote at July vote. In early August, the party nominated Khan for prime minister, and on August 18 he was sworn in.
