MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th August, 2018) Late US Senator John McCain will lie in state at the US Capital Rotunda in Washington, lower house speaker Paul Ryan from the Republic Party said late on Sunday.
McCain, considered a US national hero by many, died at the age of 81 of brain cancer late on Saturday.
�Senator John McCain will lie in state in the Rotunda of the US Capitol. Its hard to imagine a person more worthy of the honor, and Im pleased that Americans will have the opportunity to pay their respects to this hero and statesman,� Ryan wrote on Twitter.
According to the Politico newspaper, only 31 US citizens have lain in state or in honor at the Rotunda since the latters construction in 1824.
The six-term US Senator and former prisoner of war in Vietnam was diagnosed with the rare and aggressive brain cancer in 2017. On Friday, the politicians family said he had decided to halt his treatment.
McCain was first elected to the US House of Representatives in 1982, and, after two serving two terms, was elected to the US Senate in 1986.
The politician ran as the Republican Party's presidential nominee in the 2008 US election against then-Senator Barack Obama, who won the vote.
