WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th August, 2018) US Senator John McCain has died at the age of 81 of brain cancer, the politician's office said on Sunday.
Earlier in the week, McCain's family announced that the senator had decided to discontinue his medical treatment for an aggressive glioblastoma.
"Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 p.m. [23:28 GMT] on August 25, 2018," McCains office said in a statement, as cited by the NBC news.
The six-term US Senator was diagnosed with the rare and aggressive brain cancer in July of 2017 after doctors found a tumor while surgically removing a blood clot above his eye.
McCain was first elected to the US House of Representatives in 1982, and after two terms was elected to the US Senate in 1986, where he served as the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
The politician also ran as the Republican Party's Presidential Nominee in 2008 against then-Senator Barack Obama.
