Russian, Indian Senior Diplomats Discuss Nuclear Suppliers Group - Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) Russian Deputy Foreign Minsiter Sergey Ryabkov held on Friday in Moscow consultations with Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale on the Nuclear Suppliers Group export control regime and other international issues, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"[The parties] discussed the topics of the main multilateral export control regimes, including the [Nuclear Suppliers Group] NSG, cooperation within BRICS and other pressing issues of the international agenda," the ministry said in a statement.

India has been seeking full participation in NSG since submitting the application to enter the group on May 12, 2016. The issue has caused differences among the NSG members, as a range of states, including Russia and the United States, backed Indias membership, while Austria, China, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey opposed it.

NSG brings together 48 states, producing nuclear materials, equipment and technology, as well as non-nuclear materials for nuclear reactors. NSG is one of the key international export control and nuclear proliferation-reducing mechanisms.
