UN Health Dept. Confirms 25 New Ebola Infections In DR Congo In Past Week

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th August, 2018) Laboratory tests have confirmed 25 additional cases of Ebola in the northeastern corner of the Democratic Republic of Congo during the past week, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) said in a press release on Friday.

"Since the last Disease Outbreak news on 17 August 2018, 25 additional cases have been laboratory confirmed for Ebola virus disease (EVD)," the release said. "These new confirmed cases have been reported in Beni, Oicha and Mabalako health zones (North Kivu province) and Mandima health zone (Ituri Province)."

As of August 22, 2018, 103 cases of Ebola�(76 confirmed and 27 probable) including 63 deaths (36 confirmed and 27 probable) have been reported in North Kivu and Ituri Provinces, which border Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan, the release explained.

In an attempt to contain the virus, WHO is using experimental vaccines that were developed following a 2013-16 outbreak in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, which killed more than 11,000 people, the release noted.
