Russian Football Union To Back Incumbent UEFA President Ceferin At Re-Election - Statement

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th August, 2018) The Football Union of Russia said in a statement on Friday that it would support Aleksander Ceferin, the incumbent president of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), at the election of the UEFA chief in February.

"On Friday, August 24, a session of the Football Union of Russia's Executive Committee was held, during which the following decisions were made: to present (support) Aleksander Ceferin's nomination to the position of the UEFA president," the statement read.

The election is set to be held in Rome on February 7, 2019.

Ceferin was elected the UEFA president in September 2016. His mandate expires in February 2019.

On Tuesday, the Slovenian Football Association announced that Ceferin, its former head, had been nominated for re-election. The football associations of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Italy, Ireland and Germany have already voiced their support for Ceferin.
