Ousted South Korea President Park Given Extended Sentence - Reports

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th August, 2018) An appeals court in Seoul on Friday extended the prison sentence for former President Park Geun-hye in the corruption case that ousted her from office last year, local media said.

The Seoul High Court prolonged her imprisonment by one year and increased the fine to $17.8 million, the Yonhap news agency reported. She was sentenced to 24 years in jail and a fine of $16 million last April.

The scandal broke out in October 2016 when Park was accused of conspiring with her longtime friend Choi Soon-sil to extort millions of Dollars from big conglomerates in return for political favors.

The scandal led to Parks impeachment in December 2016 and arrest in March 2017. Prosecutors demanded a 30-year jail term and a fine of over $110 million for the former president.
