MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd August, 2018) The US side has not provided medical assistance to Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko, who is serving a sentence in a US prison, despite the worsening of his diseases, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.
"Russian diplomats visited the Russian national on August 21 in the Danbury correctional facility in Connecticut. During the conversation, it became clear that his diseases have once again exacerbated, and he has notified the prison authorities about that. However, as of today, medical assistance has not been provided to him," Zakharova said at a briefing.
Earlier this week, Yaroshenkos wife Viktoria arrived in the United States with her daughter Ekaterina for a meeting with Konstantin. A spokesman for Russia's consulate general in New York, Alexey Topolsky, told Sputnik that their first meeting will take place on Friday.
Russian diplomats in New York are providing all kind of support to Yaroshenko's relatives, Zakharova stated, adding that Moscow will continue to strive for upholding Yaroshenko's legal rights and his return to homeland as soon as possible.
Yaroshenko was captured in Liberia in 2010, and was sentenced a year later in the United States to 20 years in prison on charges of conspiring to import drugs into the country. In 2016, the New York Court of Appeals refused to revise the pilot's sentence.
