South African Government Slams Trump For Remark On Land Reform In Country

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd August, 2018) The South African government condemned on Thursday the call of US President Donald Trump to look into the land expropriation program in the African state, allegedly discriminating against white farmers, saying that the US president's perception of the project was "narrow" and biased.

On Wednesday, Trump said that he had tasked State Secretary Mike Pompeo with examining the South African "land and farm seizures and expropriations" and alleged mass killings of farmers after a Fox news report on seizures of land belonging to white farmers by the South African government.

"South Africa totally rejects this narrow perception which only seeks to divide our nation and reminds us of our colonial past. #landexpropriation @realDonaldTrump @PresidencyZA," the government said in a tweet.

The South African presidency has also taken note of Trump's remark, saying that the US president was underbriefed on the country's reform.

"The presidency has noted Trump's tweet, which is misinformed in our view ... We will take up the matter through diplomatic channels," South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's spokeswoman Khusela Diko told the eNCA broadcaster.

In December, the African National Congress (ANC), South Africa's ruling party, adopted a resolution providing for the redistribution of lands in favor of black South Africans without compensation. Since then the country's authorities have been engaged in discussions with the aim of deciding on measures to help implement the plan.
