Red Cross Sends Over 350 Tonnes Of Humanitarian Aid To Donbas - Ukrainian Border Service

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd August, 2018) A mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has delivered over 350 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the conflict-torn region of Donbas, the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service's press service said in a statement on Thursday.

"Twenty-one vehicles carrying the ICRC humanitarian cargo, in particular, building materials, hygiene kits and food parcels, passed through the Novotroitske entry-exit checkpoint to the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territory. A total of 365 tonnes of cargo have been registered," the press release said.

In 2017, a total of 530,000 Ukrainians received the ICRC assistance.

The conflict in Donbas started in 2014, when Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics that refused to recognize the new government in Kiev, which came to power after what they considered to be a coup.

In February 2015, the warring parties signed the Minsk peace accords to end the hostilities in the region, but the situation has remained tense, with both parties accusing each other of ceasefire violations.
