More Than 100 Officials In US State Of Florida Back Total Ban On Fracking - Advocacy Group

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd August, 2018) More than 100 locally elected officials in the state of Florida have signed a letter urging the state legislature to pass a statewide ban on fracking, the advocacy group food and Water Watch said in a press release on Wednesday.

"These local elected officials have joined over 50 organizations and over 200 businesses in Florida in calling on the Florida Legislature to ban fracking statewide," the release said.

In addition, all seven major gubernatorial candidates have voiced support for the statewide campaign to ban fracking, the release added.

In 2013, the state approved a fracking operation in Collier County near the Everglades, a region of tropical wetlands in the southern portion of the state, prompting warnings of possible groundwater contamination by chemicals used in the process.

As a result, 90 counties and cities passed ordinances and resolutions either banning the practice, supporting a statewide ban, or opposing pro-fracking legislation, the release noted.

Fracking is used to revive old oil and gas wells by injecting water and chemicals underground under high pressure to break up rock formations that trap fuel deposits.
