EU Commission Assigns $10 Mln To Improve Healthcare For Migrants In Italy - Press Release

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd August, 2018) The European Commission said on Wednesday it had allocated 9 million Euros (about $10 million) to Italy to help improve healthcare service for migrants.

"The Commission awarded 9 million in emergency assistance to Italy to help improve access to healthcare in reception facilities for asylum seekers and beneficiaries of international protection. The financial assistance will reach over 42,000 people in the regions of Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Liguria, Toscana, and Sicily," the press release read.

The commission's statement comes amid tensions around Diciotti migrant ship, which docked in Sicily on Monday. The Italian Interior Ministry refused to allow any migrants to disembark and requested assurances from the European Commission that migrants would be distributed among several countries.

Europe is experiencing a large influx of migrants, fleeing conflict or poverty in their home countries in the middle East and North Africa. Italy, due to its geographical location, often serves as the first point of entry for many refugees crossing the Mediterranean Sea.
