US Lawmakers Condemn Trump Administrations Plan to Ease Regulations for Coal Plants

A new proposal by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ease emissions standards for coal-fired power plants is a handout to special interests that will poison families while abdicating American leadership on climate change, two lawmakers said in separate press releases on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st August, 2018) A new proposal by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ease emissions standards for coal-fired power plants is a handout to special interests that will poison families while abdicating American leadership on climate change, two lawmakers said in separate press releases on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) unveiled a new policy that will allow US states, instead of the Federal government, to regulate carbon emissions from coal fired power plants.

"This rule is a brazen special interest handout that poisons families health today, and threatens their security and well-being for decades to come by accelerating the climate crisis," US House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a press release.

Senator Edward Markey, in a separate release, said Trumps plan to ease coal plant restrictions represents an "abdication" of US leadership on climate change.

The EPA said its proposal, entitled the Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) Rule, would replace the Obama administrations burdensome Clean Power Plan in an attempt to facilitate economic growth and job creation while still reducing carbon emissions that contribute to global warming.
