Myanmars State Counsellor Says Terrorism Threat in Rakhine Dangerous for Southeast Asia

Myanmars State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi said Tuesday that the terrorism threat in the country's Rakhine state remained acute and "could have grave consequences" to the entire region of Southeast Asia.

BANGKOK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st August, 2018) Myanmars State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi said Tuesday that the terrorism threat in the country's Rakhine state remained acute and "could have grave consequences" to the entire region of Southeast Asia.

"The danger of terrorist activities, which was the initial cause of events leading to the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine, remains real and present today Unless this security challenge is addressed the risk of inter-communal violence will remain. It is a threat that could have grave consequences, not just for Myanmar but also for other countries in our region and beyond," she said during a lecture in Singapore as quoted by Channel news Asia broadcaster.

The counsellor did not use the word "Rohingya" in her speech, according to the media.

Rohingya, a Muslim minority in Myanmar, have been fleeing their homes to avoid waves of violence following the government's deployment of police and military units in response to an attack by Rohingya insurgents on security posts in the Rakhine State on August 25, 2017. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly 700,000 Rohingyas have left the country for Bangladesh since last August for the fear of persecution.
