Russia, China Agree to Create Working Group to Develop Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island- Official

The authorities of Russias Far Eastern region of Khabarovsk and China's Heilongjiang province have agreed to create a joint working group for development of Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island divided between the two countries, regions Governor Vyacheslav Shport said on Tuesday.

DALIAN (China) (Pakistan Point news / Sputnik - 21st August, 2018) The authorities of Russias Far Eastern region of Khabarovsk and China's Heilongjiang province have agreed to create a joint working group for development of Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island divided between the two countries, regions Governor Vyacheslav Shport said on Tuesday.

"The joint development of trans-boundary Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island is the the most ambitious project of inter-regional Russian-Chinese cooperation in the short term prospect," Shport said at a meeting of the Russia-China intergovernmental commission.

According to Shport, in June the Khabarovsk Region for the first time hosted the so-called International business Days, where the Chinese delegation was headed by Heilongjiang Governor Wang Wentao.

"The meetings held on the sidelines of the Business Days resulted in arrangement to establish a joint working group on joint development of Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island," Shport added.

The Khabarovsk Region is ready for cooperation on the joint development of Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island, including the construction of a cargo and passenger terminal, joint hydroengineering structures, the implementation of projects under the overall concept of the island's development, the governor added.

Shport noted that, in addition to these projects, the region is ready for cooperation in the spheres of construction, iron industry, aquaculture and fish processing.

In 2017, the Ministry for Development of the Russian Far East introduced for government consideration a concept of development of Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island. In April 2018, a decision was taken to turn the passenger border crossing point on the island into cargo and passenger border crossing point. Shport previously said that this project will accelerate the logistics activity in the region and provide an additional export of cargoes amounting to 1.2 million tonnes by 2025.
